The South African National Committee for UNESCO-International Hydrological Programme (IHP) was established in 2005 and formally inaugurated in September 2006 with the Department of Water Affairs & Forestry as host.

IHP is a major inter-governmental scientific cooperation programme in hydrology and water resources.

The Committee has assisted in the implementation of a number of key regional IHP Programmes in the growing recognition that sustainable development and, in particular, integrated water resources management must not only be science-led, but that an interdisciplinary approach will be the vehicle towards growth and understanding.

This Programme is also of crucial importance for the Africa continent and envision to play a role supportive of the New Partnership for African development (NEPAD), African Ministerial Council on Water (AMCOW) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) agenda.
