Guidelines for the Sustainable Operation and Maintenance of Small Water Treatment Plants
Expanded Title:Several studies have shown that the selection and implementation of the correct water treatment system is only the first step in ensuring sustainable supply of potable water to small communities. Following the correct operational and maintenance procedures is of even greater importance for sustainability of supply. In a previous WRC study (WRC Report 738/1/00) it was found that many local small water treatment plants experienced problems in operating on a sustainable basis, due to a number of technical and human factors. However, due to the wide and encompassing nature of that previous investigation, it was not possible to identify and characterise these operation and maintenance related problems fully. This follow-on project determined the nature and full extent of the problems experienced and the report provides practical and user-friendly guidelines in the form of a manual for the required preventative and remedial actions to be taken to rectify the situation. The manual identifies the various technical issues related to operation and maintenance on small water treatment plants impacting upon the quantity and quality of potable water before distribution and provides technical guidelines to small water treatment plant operations and maintenance personnel for the sustainable operation and maintenance of such plants, compiled into a user-friendly manual suitable to be used as a general reference for everyday, practical operation and maintenance on all categories of small treatment plants found in South Africa.
