 | Introduction to integrated water meter management |
Expanded Title: | There is currently a lack of proper water meter management in South Africa, with many bulk water suppliers and municipalities without optimal and integrated meter calibration, replacement, reading, and information management systems. Often the divided responsibility between billing and meter management results in poor billing, incorrect information capture, and poor maintenance. This is further compounded by the fact that where initiatives of water demand management and conservation are required, the data is not easily accessible to the departments responsible for this task, and the frequent lack of integration between domestic and bulk water metering. It was envisaged that this project will provide clear and practical guidance on the operating principles of water meters, and the way they should be managed in a water services institution. The focus of the project was on applying current knowledge on water metering to South African conditions, and to make this information accessible to South African engineers and managers. The project aimed at developing a guide book and this has been the result or outcome. The purpose of this book is to help address the need for better water meter management by providing a practical introduction to the technical and managerial aspects of water meters. Since water metering affects different departments within a municipality, as well as various external parties, it is important to look at this topic from a holistic perspective, which is why the title refers to Integrated Water Meter Management. |
