Waterborne sanitation design guide
Expanded Title:A number of sanitation options are available. The choice of the optimal/best option has an interrelationship with the appropriate technologies, environmental impact and the health hazards to users, but is also strongly influenced by the operational and management inputs that are required for a sustainable service. Different standards for the various sanitation options are available but no collated and comprehensive documentation is available in South Africa to educate the end user and highlighted the technologies in such a way, that managers can select the optimal technology for a specific application. This leads to a number of sanitation projects that were implemented without the managers being well informed of the different options that are available. Non optimal sanitation systems lead to user dissatisfaction, high operation and maintenance cost, potential environmental risks and hygiene concerns. Furthermore the scarce water sources in South Africa, results in sanitation systems having to compete with other demand sectors. The objective of this study was to collate existing waterborne sanitation design guidelines and mould this into a new guideline covering planning, selection criteria, detailed design and operation and maintenance of such sanitation systems. This was then to be put into an Interactive Multimedia Tool (IMT) for sanitation planning and selection, used for education and design. The IMT objective was to reflect the alternative sanitation options; provide typical details of the construction and maintenance of these systems indicate the influence on water resources, health- and hygiene risks and conduct simplified cost estimation for the different sanitation options. This study has thus resulted in two multimedia based waterborne sanitation guidelines, as follows: • Waterborne sanitation design guide: Essentially this volume highlights all the types of waterborne sanitation technologies which are available, providing information on the technical, costs and design elements related to the specific technology. This guide is aimed at equipping the user on the key features of the technologies and their requirements. • Water sanitation operation and maintenance guide: The following people will benefit from the guideline and IMT: Once a technology choice has been made and implemented, this guide will assist the user with the day to day operations of the system chosen, as well as the long term requirements of its operation. The guide covers elements of routine maintenance and active asset management processes. This first such consolidated and comprehensive guide in South Africa on the subject of water sanitation. The guidelines will also be a great educational tool which can be distributed throughout the country cost effectively (simply a DVD) which would open the managers and decision makers eyes to the alternative options available.
