The influence of irrigation on groundwater at the Vaalharts irrigation scheme – preliminary assessment
Expanded Title:The National Department of Agriculture (NDA) embarked on an initiative of their own to map groundwater at Vaalharts in order to determine the need for and the location of drains. The willingness of NDA to install a monitoring network of piesometers presented a window of opportunity to establish a network to monitor groundwater over an extended period of time. Data from such a network can be utilized to quantify leaching of irrigation water to groundwater, quantify groundwater flow to the Harts River, model groundwater flow and determine groundwater salt and water balance and salt sinks. The influence of different irrigation techniques and drains on groundwater can also be determined. This consultancy was initiated with as main purpose to establish such a network, monitor groundwater levels and quality over a period of one year and interpret the findings to illustrate the usefulness of the measurements. The consultancy represented the first phase of a potential longer term groundwater project. It capitalised on the willingness of the NDA to install a monitoring network of piesometers in order to design and establish a monitoring network. It was foreseen that monitoring would proceed for one season and to be followed (if found to live up to expectations) with a project proposal to monitor groundwater over an extended period of time, and quantify in greater detail the leaching of irrigation water to groundwater; quantify groundwater flow to the Harts River, model groundwater flow and determine groundwater salt and water balance and salt sinks.
