Research Framework for Supporting Domestic Rainwater Harvesting in South Africa
Expanded Title:he collection, conveyance and storage of rainwater. There is currently a growing interest in applying sustainable solutions and green technology in efforts to improve access to water. Rainwater harvesting is regarded as a technique for optimising the use of available rainfall in any given location. The scope, method, technologies, system complexity, purpose and end use vary from rain barrels for garden irrigation in urban areas, to large-scale collection of rainwater for all domestic uses. The Department of Water Affairs (DWA) and the Water Research Commission (WRC) recognised the value of rainwater harvesting as an interim, and in some cases permanent, measure in providing basic water services to households in South Africa. Thus discussions on the role of rainwater harvesting in augmenting water supply to all citizens in the country in their efforts to address the water backlog and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of providing all South African citizens with access to basic water services by 2014 were initiated. Specifically, a workshop with the intention of engage all rainwater harvesting (RWH) stakeholders and solicit input regarding the need for developing RWH guidelines to ensure sustainable implementation of rainwater harvesting to assist the sector in the provision of basic water services and water demand management was held. The aim of the workshop was to share knowledge and experiences on the concept and technology of rainwater harvesting (RWH) for domestic use and how it fits into the overall picture of appropriate rural and urban water supply. During the workshop the latest research outputs from the Water Research Commission (WRC) regarding Microbial and Chemical Quality Assessment of Domestic Rainwater Harvesting and the Design and Optimisation of Point of Use Treatment Systems, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) regarding optimisation of rain water systems (appropriate technology) in order to improve water quality, and other relevant research from other institutions was presented and discussed. From these discussions, research gaps were identified, from which a research strategy for rainwater harvesting was formulated.
