Sustainable Development of the Waterberg Coalfields: Scenarios for Optimal Settlement Patterns
Expanded Title:For the purposes of this study, sustainable development was defined as “a dynamic process in which the combined economic, environmental, and social systems meet the needs of the current human population, while maintaining or increasing the resources and productive capacities that are passed on to future generations”. In the South African context, this includes the need to maintain a dynamic balance between creating a fair and equal society, through an equitable distribution of wealth and opportunity, and sustaining the biophysical environment’s ability to support an acceptable quality of life for this and future generations.
