Water, Sediment, Nutrient and Organic Carbon Fluxes in Small-Scale Agriculture Landscapes
Expanded Title:An improved understanding of the processes of land degradation either by sheet and linear erosion and their impact on vegetation coverage, land management and their consequences on the fluxes of water, nutrient and organic carbon constitutes one of the most important evaluation prerequisites for successful improvement of the ecosystem functioning. The results of this study showed that on gully formation and evolution, adequate mitigation of linear erosion can only be achieved by lessening soil piping and bank collapse. No-tillage not only decreases soil erosion, but when the mulch is exported (as forage for small scale farms or as a potential source of energy/biofuel in large scale farming), can also reduce soil CO2 emissions and thus mitigate climate change. The study tends to contradict the popularly held attribution that overgrazing is responsible for land degradation. A simple shift in the way cows are managed, where pasture rotation could replace free grazing, could help to rehabilitate the land and increase cow density in the future.
