The Water Research Commission (WRC) is a dynamic hub for water-centred knowledge, innovation and intellectual capital, providing leadership for research and development through the support of knowledge creation, transfer and application. The WRC seeks to appoint a Coordinator to coordinate and monitor all Water-Linked Ecosystems management and project related administration, budget processes as well as transfer of knowledge through workshops and publications in order to ensure a comprehensive and continued support service to all internal and external stakeholders.


Minimum qualifications and experience required:


·        A 3 year Administrative diploma or degree  

·        At least 3 – 5  years’ experience in project administration and office management



The position entails the following responsibilities:


  • Coordinate Project life including scheduling meetings and managing documentation of all project related meetings
  • Project administration
  • Organize workshops
  • Operate FMS (Fund Management System) in all stages of contract and project management
  • Financial administration
  • Facilitate Water-Linked Ecosystems related networking (internal and external)
  • Coordinate/organize knowledge dissemination support drives
  • Office management



Job Competencies:



·        Project management skills – planning, coordinating and scheduling

·        Basic financial/bookkeeping skills – basic accounting and budgeting

·        Excellent oral and written communication skills

·        General project administration skills

·        IT skills (MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)

·        Strong initiative

Applications are invited from suitably qualified interested individuals for the following position within the Key Strategic Area (KSA) of WATER USE AND WASTE MANAGEMENT, based in EAST LONDON or QUEENSTOWN, Eastern Cape.





WRC is leading a two year project funded by the African Development Bank related to “Social Franchising for Operations and Maintenance of School Sanitation Facilities and Demonstration of on-site Faecal Sludge Treatment in East London, Eastern Cape“.  The position requires providing oversight and management regarding the variety of activities associated with the initiative undertaken in partnership with Eastern Cape Department of Education.  Being a field based initiative we are seeking an individual based in the East London or Queenstown area.


This innovative thinker and self-starter should be in possession of at least a Bachelor degree or equivalent, specialising in management of water services (water supply and sanitation) related disciplines coupled with good programme management, report writing and practical experience within this field. The ability to network, communicate and co-ordinate effectively would be a strong advantage and the incumbent should have strong project management skills. Very good interpersonal skills and the ability to integrate knowledge from diverse sources are essential for success. 


The successful candidate will: -

·        Strategically manage and coordinate all activities related to special projects and programmes in the Eastern Cape.  This will include:

o   Project Management  :   

§  Development  and application of work plan, implementation plan, detailed procurement plan

§  Establishing and managing gender sensitive Project Steering Committee

§  On-going monitoring and reporting on the project s

§  Manage procurement of goods and services

o   Knowledge Management

§  Procuring  and conducting baseline surveys

§  Refinement of the peri-urban sanitation franchise business model

§  Development and production of case studies, sanitation research papers  and briefs for publication

§  Organizing peer-learning/study tours/workshops

·        Provide strategic leadership to projects and affiliated activities.

·        Preparing timely reports as per requirements.

·        Coordinate and lead knowledge generation, transfer, and its application.

·        Provide leadership and networking, both nationally and internationally in the water related activity area.


Appointment will be made in line with the WRC's employment equity policy and remuneration will be negotiated on the basis of an all-inclusive package.
