 WRC workshops during the WISA 2010 Conference, Durban

The WRC was a key player at the WISA Biennial Conference 2010 held in the Durban ICC. Numerous WRC papers were presented. Annatjie Moolman,Research Manager at the WRC, kept her group busy with her paper on Emerging issues of drinking water quality: Is our drinking water safe or not? And another paper she presented was on Quality of Domestic Water Supplies Guidelines: 10 years of relevance to the sector. Jo Burgess,Research Manager at WRC  also presented hers on Cleaner production technologies in SA Mining.

Eiman Karar,Director Water Resources Management,  presented two papers on Water for Growth and Development in Africa –Understanding and addressing policy complexities and Groundwater -surface water interaction: The need for common understanding .Heidi Snyman ,Director Water Centred Knowledge,presented a  paper on South African Sludge management Guidelines.

Apart from the facilitation of these workshops, the WISA conference became a good platform for the dissemination of WRC and WIN-SA knowledge products. The WRC exhibition stand did not only display reading material but became an interactive platform where visitors could learn how to use the WRC Electronic Water Knowledge Hub (EWKH) and Fund Management System (FMS).

The WISA Conference had  150 speakers who  presented papers in parallel sessions from 19 to 22 April. Various papers presented covered the topics on  Management & Institutional Affairs, Potable Water, Ground Water, Environmental aspects ,Membrane processes, Community Water Supply and Sanitation ,Waste Water, Industrial Water and Effluent ,Education and Training and Information Technology ,Mine Water, Integrated Water Resources Management , Health related aspects and Information Technology.

WISA remains the water sector’s initiative for ensuring South Africa’s water is at the centre of economic growth and development even in the next decade. The emphasis of the conference is on knowledge sharing.
