The International Conference on Ecohydrological (Ecology + Hydrology) Processes and Sustainable Floodplain Management took place in Lodz, Poland. Speakers at the conference focused on how Ecohydrology can be explored so as to manage floodplains and make it beneficial to humans. Badly managed floodplains are responsible for destructive or disastrous floods all over the world. However, if we ensure that floodplains are managed and protected as part and parcel of the whole catchment, we can reduce not only flood disasters, but increase and protect biodiversity and then benefit from goods and services from a healthy environment including rivers, and wetlands. Cases studies from all over the world were presented. Dr Stanley Liphadzi attended the conference and presented a poster on “Determining water for the environment in perennial and non-perennial river systems in South Africa”. Many people were interested in this subject or my poster and I used this opportunity to market our IEWA conference which will be held in Port Elizabeth in Feb 2009.
