 The WRC participates in Stockholm water week, Sweden

The WRC participated during the Stockholm water week by sending two delegates, Rivka Kfir and Jay Bhagwan. The Water week events took place from August 16 to 22, 2009, characterized by plenary sessions, workshops and side- events addressing different themes and facilitated by many water sector experts from various countries and institutions.  Various plenary workshops and side meetings were held. 

On 20 August the WRC, CSIR, Amanz’abantu Services, Irish Aid and the Department of Education Eastern Cape held a lunch time side event. The theme of the meeting was “Exploring water services operation and maintenance through franchising partnerships”. Jay Bhagwan facilitated the event and also presented. The event was well attended by many and resulted in many further discussions and interest from various groups including the business sector . The meeting focused on the piloted project on a large scale in rural Eastern Cape.  "The WRC in conjunction with the provincial Department of Education and CSIR’s business partner Amanz’abantu Services, trainee franchisees have already cleaned up the sanitation facilities of 200 schools in the Butterworth region" says Jay . Irish Aid is funding the detailed modelling, formulation of training programmes and compilation of procedure manuals required for the pilot.

By invitation from the German MBZ, Dr Kfir participated in the lunch time Question & Answer session with Dr. Pathak, Stockholm Water Award Winner. The discussion was chaired by Mr. Franz Marré, Head of Division 'Water, energy, urban development', Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Germany. Dr Arne Panesar from GTZ also participated in the discussion. As from   23 to 26 August,   Dr Kfir and Ditshego also attended a four days programme organised by SEI   EcoSanRes group on sanitation.This included a trip to an ecological village and a Sanitation Policy workshop. Ditshego and Rivka presented on national legislation and targets on sanitation in relation to local implementation.
