Terms of Reference for a Directed WRC Project : Ecological Restoration

The Water Research Commission has funded a number of restoration or rehabilitation or remediation projects over a number of years through its Thrust called Ecosystem Rehabilitation, and continues to do so. These projects clearly show an enormous demand for restoration and a lot of work being done but they are presently isolated activities with little overall coordination. It is unknown how much benefit, if any, the current approach to restoration achieves for South Africa’s heavily degraded ecosystems.

Jointly started and funded by the Departments of Water Affairs, Environmental Affairs and Expanded Public Works, there is now a considerable body of knowledge on the extent of ecological degradation in South Africa. Much of this covers wetlands, rivers and impoundments, with the recently published National Biodiversity Assessment report and National Freshwater Ecosystem Priority Areas, both published in 2011, being just two relevant references.
