Title

Gates Sanitation Technology Innovation Seminar

Location

Start Time

2014/10/30 09:30 AM

End Time

2014/10/30 01:30 PM

Description

Despite significant progress since 1994, sanitation in South Africa remains a huge challenge, particularly in the rural and peri-urban environment. The Department of Science and Technology has therefore partnered with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to tackle the country’s sanitation backlog through research, innovation and technology. The partnership has resulted in the creation of South African Sanitation Technology Demonstration Programme, which will see innovative, new-generation sanitation technologies demonstrated in South Africa. Demonstration of these cutting-edge, prototype technologies, identified through the Gates Sanitation Challenge, affords opportunities for technology enhancement with regard to performance, operations and maintenance, social acceptance, and entrepreneurial opportunities. Learning from this partnership's demonstration initiatives will put the Department of Science and Technology in a position to provide evidence-based advice to inform the policy decisions of the Department of Water and Sanitation, which is responsible for the delivery of sanitation services in South Africa. The seminar programme features presentations from the Department of Science and Technology, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Water Research Commission, and the developers of the new-generation sanitation technologies. To confirm your attendance or ask for more information, please contact Ms Shirley Machelesi at shirley@wrc.org.za or 012 330 0340.
